According to www.gunviolencearchive.org, there have been over 125 mass shootings (four or more people killed or wounded) in the United States since 1 January 2021. In spades, the USA has the dubious distinction of being #1 in the world for mass shootings.

Therefore, it was heartening to hear President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Attorney General Garland step up and present a plan to lessen gun violence. Some actions are done by Executive Action, meaning they are not laws and can change with a new administration, and they are limited in scope. Some are specific proposals that will be presented to lawmakers for debate and vote. President Biden asked, “What are we waiting for? People want action. Appealing to the Second Amendment is a phony argument. All that is needed is the will and courage to act. Turn pain into purpose. Enough! Enough! Enough! 316 people are shot everyday. 106 people die every day. This is an epidemic for God’s sake.”

The GVP (gun violence prevention) list is impressive. 1) Regulation of “Ghost Guns” to require serial numbers on all parts; 2) Elimination of stabilizer braces for pistols which make shooting more accurate; 3) Make it easier for states to write and pass Red Flag Laws (ERPO) which will result in fewer suicides and lower lethal domestic violence (every month, 63 women are shot and killed); 4) A new director of the ATF will be nominated to fill a position that has been vacant since 2015; 5) Community action funding.

In addition, President Biden urges lawmakers to pass a bill authorizing Universal Background Checks for ALL gun purchases. The Charleston Loop Hole should be closed which allowed Dylann Roof to purchase a weapon because the three day hold limit had passed. The Violence Against Women Act should be passed to prevent violent boyfriends from getting too close and owning a weapon. We should ban assault-type weapons with large magazines. Gun manufacturers should not be prevented from being sued. He said, “They would have a come to Jesus moment!”

In the words of Attorney General Merrick Garland, “None of these actions can do it alone.” Shannon Watts, Founder and Director of Moms Demand Action, says, “Republicans are very hesitant to pass gun legislation. We need to build a grass roots movement.”

Yes, we have a gun epidemic. 125 and counting. We’re #1! No question, these actions will save lives. No question, these actions respect the Second Amendment. No question, Jesus would be pleased by these actions. I urge everyone to write and call your elected lawmakers and demand support of these actions, both nationally and state-wide. Also, become involved with local GVP groups including ENGAGE: Lutherans for GVP, Protect Minnesota, Moms Demand Action, and Giffords. In the words of our President, “Enough!” In the words of Jesus, “Enough!” 125 and Counting?

Peace!
